In 2000, with support from the Trust for Mutual Understanding, we were able to sponsor two interns from Russia as part of our international internship program. The first, Boris Borisov, came to Missoula for training in October. After completing his internship he accompanied our staff members Mike Beltz and Mary Anne Peine to Khabarovsk in the Russian Far East where they all participated in the first Russian Conservation GIS conference, also supported by TMU.

The second intern, Anna Grokholevich, is from Irkutsk in central Siberia. Due to scheduling difficulties she arrived in Missoula in 2001. For her profile see the 2001 intern page.

Eyge, Yakutsk, Rep. of Sakha, Russia

The Republic of Sakha in northeastern Siberia is home to the one of the largest reserves of virgin forest on the planet. Sakha comprises almost one-fifth of the Russian Federation and almost half of the region is covered with taiga forest. Prior to Boris none of the conservation NGOs in Yakutsk were using GIS, and as a result we had identified this region as a top priority.

During his training at our GIS lab, Boris learned to use GIS and developed a spatial database for his region that will be used to advance a number of conservation efforts, including the monitoring of logging activities and the management of protected areas. While interning in Missoula, Boris also worked with EOS Education project at the University of Montana and is now being supported by their "Hotspots" program, which has funded the acquisition of several satellite images to compliment Boris's GIS data. Boris returned to Sakha with a full suite of GIS software, including PC ArcInfo, ArcView, Spatial Analyst, and Digital Chart of the World. After Boris's visit, our International Program submitted a GIS hardware grant in conjunction with his NGO, Eyge, to the Conservation Technology Support Program (CTSP). This grant was successful, and in 2001 CTSP provided the group with all the resources necessary to complete their own GIS projects.
