In 2003, supported by Trust for Mutual Understanding, five activists
from Russia were able to come to Southern California to participate in
SCGIS International Program. With other SCGIS scholars, they stayed for
one week at the James
San Jacinto Mountains Reserve where they received training in ArcGIS
and learned about the latest high-tech GIS approaches for studying
ecosystems in Southern California. Interns also received several days of
training at ESRI's headquarters in Redlands before heading to Monterey
for the SCGIS conference. Immediately following the SCGIS Conference,
everyone traveled down to San Diego for five days to attend the ESRI
User Conference, where over 10,000 GIS users congregated and shared
their work and ideas. After the conferences, with their brains full of
new information, they returned to Redlands for another week of GIS
training by ESRI instructors before going home.
