In Washington D.C. they were joined by Prashant Hedao and Rankin Holmes of BSCI, as well as another 18 or so interns from the Society for Conservation GIS. Here they received two weeks of GIS training in a variety of areas such as Geodatabase design and management, ArcGIS Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst and Internet Map Services. After the GIS trainings, everyone traveled to Sheperdstown for the SCGIS Conference interns were able to present and share to individuals from all around the globe, the GIS conservation work they are conducting at their homes in Russia. With Anna’s guidance the Denezhkin Kamen Preserve have started to develop a spatial database of species distribution within the context of landscape structure, as defined by vegetation, topography and land-use patterns. With this data they hope to post a public web page that can be accessed by all interested parties to help in education and awareness of the management issues in the preserve. Also, in the spring of 2005, our BSCI staff will travel to Severouralsk to conduct a GIS training for the Denezhkin Kamen staff and other Nature Reserves throughout the Ural region. With Anna’s training and experience we believe it shall just be a matter of time before they succeed in their largest GIS endeavors. Anna’s email address is zap_dk@hotbox.ru
