The International Program at the Big Sky
Conservation Institute was created to help conservation
advocates from around the world to develop conservation-oriented
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) computer mapping assessment and
management skills, in order to facilitate protection of intact
ecosystems and promote ecologically sustainable development projects.
Our International Program helps conservationists and natural
resource managers do their work better, by assisting them with
technology transfer and capacity building. We work with our colleagues
overseas to identify conservationists and natural resource
managers working to protect and restore biodiversity and
stimulate thoughtful economic development, and we help them develop
the skills they need to make them more effective in accomplishing their
goals. Our International Program works in two main areas:
- We provide hands-on overseas training
in GIS computer mapping for conservationists and natural
resource managers. We offer in-country training
seminars, consult with organizations to help them
develop GIS programs, and assist organizations in obtaining GIS computer
software and hardware;
- We bring international conservation
interns to the United States for advanced GIS training
and to attend conferences and seminars.
